AO: The Huey

Conditions

43 degrees and falling, wind at full value

COP

Mosey to Love Shack. Blue informed Q that there was a “puddle” on the track but did not suggest we go the other direction as the “puddle” was actually a small pond…thanks a lot Blue.

SSH 25 IC

WMH 10 IC

Angle grinders 20 IC

3rd grade exercise 10 IC

LBAC forward/backward 10 each IC

5 beer truck burpees

The Thang

EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute) – Ascending/Descending Burpees with Squat and Bonnie Blair chaser

  • 8 minutes: start with 3 reps, add 1 rep every minute up to 10 (disclaimer – no one completed the 8 rep round so we just did continuous reps until time was up)
  • 8 minutes: start with 10, subtract 1 rep every minute down to 3 (at this point we were pretty smoked, so the Bonnie Blair was removed – so 1 rep was a burpee with a squat chaser)

Count off and split into 2 teams

Race to 60 LBCs each PAX, standing up signifies you are done

Winning team earns the 80# sandbag, losing team gets the 60# because they are weak.

  • One PAX each team performs sandbag carry down sidewalk to track and back (~100 yards total) while other PAX complete 100 each of chicken peckers (easy count), aquamans (aquamen?), and crab position toe touches (F3 name IDK, easy count)

Candor – Q source Q3.8 – Graciously Telling The Hard Truth And Demanding To Hear It From Others. In the world we live in today it is difficult to tell people the hard truth for fear of offending them, but we have a unique opportunity within F3 as we seek to help one another become leaders in our community. If you truly believe a brother needs to hear something, tell him without fear of repercussion. At the same time, we must be ready to hear the truth from others and act on that constructive criticism in order to better ourselves.

    QIC:  John Doe

    Date: 01/20/22

PAX: Mansiere, Hambone, FNG – Moose Knuckle, Burrito, Yellow 5, Laces Out, Pebbles, Zima, Sidekick, Whitler, Recycle, Jorts, Proscuitto, 8 Mile

    AO: Smackdown

    Conditions

Where to start? It was a day or two post thaw from a recent snow that covered the mountain. Rain had drizzled in earlier that morning to only stop just before startex. It was wet and muddy. There was an 8-12 mph northeast wind calmly blowing across. The temperatures were hovering in the mid-30’s but the windchill made it feel more like the high 20’s.

The conditions were so unfavorable that YQIC considered changing the planned events to be more PAX “friendly” but decided against doing so in order to stick with the theme. A decision that may or may not have been the correct one, but one that felt necessary.

    COP

Mostly traditional type excercises. LBAC – 15 (IC), Rev LBAC – 15 (IC), Slow (at Proscuitto’s request) Tea pots – 10 (IC), FF – 10 (yes IC), Willy Mays Hays – 10 (IC), No SSH because YQIC is injured (wait…is that an excuse?)

    The Thang

To start we counted off in groups of 5. However, much like YQICs Wordle game the math was a little off. After having to get most of the PAX to stop walking and talking we finally made it to our destination on the other side of the bleachers in the field close to the pull-up bars. At this point YQIC realized his count was off and we need to be in groups of 3 and not 5. Quick reshuffle and we were off. One would say we were having a solid start to the morning.

    No Fun Bus

PAX A – Bearcrawl 20 yds to pull up bar does 1 pull up then relieve PAX B

PAX B – 10 Toe Tap Merkins (easy way) then AmRep Aqua mans until tagged by PAX A; Once tagged by PAX A then bearcrawl 20 yds to PAX C

PAX C – 10 Dive Bombers then AmRep Aqua mans until tagged by PAX B; Once tagged by PAX B then bearcrawl 20 yds to pull up bar and do 1 pull up then relieve PAX A

Once each PAX in the group has cycled through and done 1 pull up then the round is complete. The cycle continues for the duration only to increase by 1 pull up each round. Round 1 = 1 pull-up per PAX, Round 2 = 2 pull ups per PAX, etc…

We did 3 full rounds….more to come on this

    On Your Six

Big Boi Sit Up – 60 reps

4 Way Crunches (LBC, Left Oblique Crunch, Right Oblique Crunch, Reverse LBC) – 50 reps or 200 Total

Heals to Heaven – 60 reps

Flutter Kicks – 150 Hard Count or 300 Total

1/2 Sit Up – 100 reps called (PAX did AmRep for 2 minutes instead)

    COT

Sticking with the theme from the previous week YQIC referenced a recent series by Andy Stanly called “Paper Walls.” Just like in the COT at Hacksaw and this particular message from Andy, the premise centered around excuses. Which the majority of the PAX this particular morning failed at completely. Excuses in many cases turn into “reasons”, but that is a false cover or a paper wall put up instead. Those reasons tend to become a “because”. I didn’t do the bearcrawls because my hands were cold, I did SSH instead of aqua man’s, because I didn’t want to get wet or I’m here going through the motions so that’s good enough. An excuse can be defined as a lie to ourselves about ourselves. Over time it can even become a believable story or a “reason” why we do or don’t do something.

These little excuses can become bigger excuses. They can begin to pile up and snowball on us, eventually effecting our friendships, our marriages, our relationships with our kids. The good news is we can control them. We can shift the narrative. Our excuses should be more geared to good, and toward a growing relationship with Jesus. If we can do the little things well and not make an excuse then He will open the door to empower us to do BIG things well.

BALL OF MAN: One of the OG’s himself Whittler (so good to see you) lead us out in prayer. Continued prayers for several PAX out there.

YQIC was extremely excited about this trip to the mountain. There was potential for several old school guys showing up and it was going to feel a bit like old times. Admittedly, I was a little giddy at the thought of it. Got there so early out of pure excitement. Couldn’t sleep. The attendance did not disappoint. We had a mix of old school, new school, guys from near and far. Solid group of HIMs, no doubt.

ALOT of mumble chatter this particular morning. Plenty of laughter, plenty of jokes, and plenty of standing around. Maybe because it did feel like somewhat of a reunion to some. Or maybe that’s just the identity of Smackdown, only time will tell.

Halfway through the workout several PAX had succumbed to creating an entirely new workout through modifications. Not due to injury or lack of physical ability but because of conditions. I like to image had it been dry and 65 there would have been more effort given. So YQIC modified too. That’s when we hit the six for 20 minutes. Everyone did their best to find a dry spot. It felt a little intentional that everyone (but one) made sure they were far away from me. Maybe it was from agitation, frustration, or plain coincidence?? Who knows? Anyhow, thank you 8 Mile for not treating me like a leper:)

Note: Pebbles has always been one of the fastest bear crawlers I’ve seen, but Zima might just take the cake. Even with an injured back that dude was motoring.

Jorts apparently has an incredible story about a tiny horse. I hope to hear it one day.

“It could be raining.” – Pebbles

“Why can’t you hear a pterodactyl scream in the bathroom?……They’re dead” – Whittler

“At least there were no themes today.” – Proscuitto

Zima’s announcement presentation was phenomenal. Precise, direct, and to the point with an incredible flow. I hope I got it all.

      The Thang

It is basketball season and time to get the team in shape. Hopefully this is part one of a series of beatdowns with a basketball theme by the Q. As anyone knows and has watched Hoosiers, before you play you must get in peak physical condition! Parking lot marked off with cones in the dimensions of a basketball court…94’x50′. Center Court marked. At each corner is a exercise for the team to complete. Merkins in one corner, X-factors hard count in another, Squats with block, and Curl/Press in the fourth. Blocks divided up between the squat/curl-press corners. Pair up to have someone to commiserate with…sprint to a corner of your choice but not everyone to the same corner, do 32 reps of the exercise, sprint back to center court and do 5 burpees. Moving clockwise to the next corner from where you started, sprint there, do 30 reps of that exercise, back to center court, 5 burpees…and so on and so forth until you hit 0. Help the six in at the end as we are a team. For your burpee enjoyment a selection of songs with the theme of “Heat”, “Hot”, and “Fire” played on the Q’s speaker.

Next up, split team into two groups and sprint to opposite corners. Bear crawl the width of the court, sprint the length, meet in the middle once you made it around the court. Repeat.

      Finally, 5 mins of Mary.

      COT

As men, as members of F3, we are typically performance driven. We push ourselves to be better, setting metrics and benchmarks of accomplishments. We strive to complete goals and projects, and this can be a good thing. But word of caution, don’t let this become the way of a walk with Christ. When you complete a beatdown or something off the to do list, commonly you sit down and rest as the task is complete. Hebrews 1:3 states once Christ completed the purification of all sin, He SAT DOWN at the right hand of the Father. Why did He sit down? Because the work is finished. Be careful in your Christian life to work hard out of love for what He has done for us and not out of sense of earning His love or trying to make your way to Him. Christ loves you on your worst day the same as He does on your best day. Work for Him out of true love for what He has done for you.

      Moleskin

Mumble chatter was present. Grumbling to start with on the announcement of the 4 exercises as several team members arms were toast from a vicious Thursday beatdown with a block by AOL. When we were about complete with the first part, team was discouraged that only 15 minutes had passed. Sprints to center court and back to corner quickly turned into slow jog/walk as team was not in basketball shape yet. “This sucks” and “Who invited Stork” were commonly heard.

Pax seemed to grumble a bit about the traveling method. If YHC recalls correctly, it was something along the lines of; “we couldn’t just do a regular Dora, we had to almost like a suicide thing or ladder deal”.
Above is a pretty accurate description: each time a partner traveled he went to, he went one Star further and ran back. Once we got to the Army Star, it got much much easier as we worked our way in reverse from there.
        Time. Mosey to Flag.

        COT

Desmond Doss, known for incomparable bravery, was a “Conscientious Objector”. In the times I have Qed Hacksaw, I failed to truly recognize this American Hero, and the example he gives us in which to live.
We all have a moral compass, and in today’s world, we are often encouraged that our moral compass calls us to anger or “set aside” someone with different viewpoints or different moral compasses.
Desmond Doss reminds us we should have a different approach in life.
As Choo Choo reminded us at Shot House on Monday, our mental state and mental discipline, or lack thereof, guide our habits. Our habits create a perception of us to others.
How do his COT meld with Desmond Doss’s lesson? A strong moral compass will guide self-discipline which will create positive habits which, in turn, will only help others see a positive light and love in us.
See, Desmond had a strong moral compass, so much so that he loved his fellow man enough to serve and risk his life but also stood behind his morals of not harming another person. He reminds us of the power of standing strong in our morals while also providing love and service to others.
How about we strive to do this? Stand strong for what is right. What is right is loving and serving others. This takes immeasurable amounts of self-discipline, BUT it also leads to positive habits that impact others in a positive way.
Finally, in turn, those positive habits often lead to the “change you want to see in the world”.

YHC Shared a verse from the book of Hebrews.

          Hebrews 12;1-3

Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2..looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3..For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

YHC Talked about being a follower of Christ, and as a believer we are to look to Christ throughtout our day to day struggles for our source of guidance and direction. as it is through Christ that we have our source of life. Keep pressing on, no matter what you have going on. Keep your eyes focused on Christ.

Shared a story about how yesterday I was consumed with a task at hand, and almost missed an opportunity to pepper my M with snowballs. I am admittedly awful about getting focused on a task and forgetting to actually live in the moment. One day, after I will have spent the entirety of my life making plans, I will realize that I have burned through my youth and the only plan left is to die. Live in the moment, put aside your plans, and take the opportunities as they come.

YHC and His family over the last several months have been through so many things.

M’s Seizure and Memory Loss, Loss of Grandfather, Loss of M’s Brother, and now YHC’s Father being in the hospital with COVID. During this season that we are in we are learning to press on, to keep pushing forward. Perseverance is never easy, but it is necessary to move on. YHC shared a verse from the book of John.

John 16:33 “I Have spoken these things i have spoken to you so that you may have peace. In this world you will have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world.

We will have go through seasons that will be hard, but if we look to Christ as our guide, the One who leads us through our day to day, we can continue to persevere and push through all that is going on. He Himself is our peace.

It was a COLD morning on the side of Hacksaw Hill.

a few PAX ended up not having gloves which made Carrying thier blocks even more painful than it already was. Mandela was seen at one point running up the hill with his hands tucked under his arm pits just trying to warm them up.

Most of the PAX were not thrilled with what YHC had chosen for us to particpate in this morning. There was plenty of Grumble Chatter……The question that was asked was …….if any of the PAX had done something to make the q mad at them. i can say, Q was not mad at all….. just frustrated with Uncle Joe for the Ski Abs he continues to call when he Q’s…….but hey it’s all good. LOL

What is your goal for this year? Where there is no vision the people will perish according to Proverbs. In Philipians 3:12-14, the author Paul who is in prison, soon to die states that he has not arrived yet so neither have we. Paul states we have 1 thing to do…forget the past and strain forward, press on toward the goal. Remember the past is merely a rudder to guide you, not a anchor to hold you back. Remember pressing on in your daily walk in F3, as a husband, as a father, as church member, as a employee will be difficult and take max effort as it did in our Tabata today.

Mumble chatter was present. Quickly into the Tabata there was much groaning and grumbling. PAX were not happy with Rodeo for having shared the timer app with Stork on a previous beatdown. There was a lot of “That’s what she said” when PAX asked on several occasions if they had to do another round. Facetious ‘Congrats’ were given to the Q for a great beatdown.
