COT

There’s another mutation of COVID on the loose. We’re going to have to man up and face it, just like taking another punch to the face. If you remember the Rocky Balboa movies, the moral of the story was not how often you can beat the crap out of someone else…it’s how often you can get up after taking a beating. Sometimes all we have to do is get back up. It serves as inspiration for ourselves and others. We have to keep on keeping on.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 regarding Christians

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

We are called to succeed. Maybe not in the definition others have for succeed, but from a Biblical (eternal) standpoint we’re supposed to be the historical figures who stood up when things were getting rough.

Fear is something that has you. Faith is something you have.  -Dr. Sam Greer (aka F3 Blindside)

““Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”

      The Thang

Today’s Thang consisted of several themes based on historically significant events, as well as, historically significant celebrations. The Thang playlist also came from inspiration from these events. Further explanation of this occurs in the COT, so please feel free to continue reading and learn of these event from your resident history teacher.

      The Samuel Colt

Partner Up. Bear Crawl catch me if you can.

Pax 1 completes 17 Plank Jacks.  Pax 2 Bear crawls.

Pax 1 catches Pax 2. Flapjack. Rinse and Repeat for a lap.
As Pax finish, they will hold plank to wait for the Six. The second lap consisted of Pax 1 completing 17 squats while Pax 2 did Bernies.

      Lifting the Iron Curtain
Partner up again only with a new partner.
Sumo Squats with Upright Rows — 200 reps in Dora Format.
Exploring Pax could choose from any/all of the following movement combinations.
Side Shuffle — Bernie — AYG Sprint — Squid decided to add Bear Crawls

      Boston Massacre
15 Thrusters. Bernie to marker. AYG Sprint back. Rinse and Repeat 4 more times.

      COT

The COP consisted of  reps of 17 in cadence equaling 34 total reps which was the caliber of the very first revolver in which Samuel Colt developed on March 5, 1836.  This was, of course, the inspiration for the portion of The Thang which included two revolutions around the track and 17 reps of plank jacks and 17 squat reps.

On March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill famously coined the term “Iron Curtain” to describe the stronghold in which the Soviet Union possessed.  In the spirit of this, we “lifted” the Iron Curtain to the soundtrack of Rocky IV which is, of course, the quintessential demonstration of our Cold War emotions in the United States.

Since March 5th seems to include several events revolving around (see what I did there) conflict and a weapon often used in those conflicts, we incorporated another significant event which occurred on March 5th, 1770: The Boston Massacre. Samuel Gray, Samuel, Maverick, and Samuel Adams were all important names of the Boston Massacre. Three Sams times 5 Patriots wounded, and you have the inspiration for the 15 Thrusters.

So much of the workout was inspired or developed from historical events which greatly impacted the world, but I was not there for these events which means, I had to read about these events.

Well, look at that, a lover of history and history teacher goes reading about historical events which occurred on March 5th which also happens to be the date signifying the end of “Read Across America Week”.  During “Read Across America Week”, we honor one of the most celebrated authors in our nation’s history: Dr. Seuss. His birthday also happens to fall on my sister’s birthday as well: March 2nd.

To wrap things up, we finish with some profound knowledge and wisdom provided by the author’s birthday of which we celebrate….

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.

Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.

A person’s a person, no matter how small.

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

      You can steer yourself

      any direction you choose.

      You’re on your own.

And you know what you know.

And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go….

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.

Take these words from Dr. Seuss to heart. Be who you are. Make sure to take joy in life as it happens. Remember to love those people around you. Make decisions and go forward.

Lastly and most importantly, Be. That. Man. Who. Cares.

“Run the race as if to win”

        1 Corinthians 9:24-27

We men must train our minds and hearts, just like our bodies, so that we can “win the race”. For the Christian, in this context it means serving others and reaching out to them to win them to Christ. It also means treat each day as a new challenge to conquer, and in another metaphor, treat each day as if you’re going to war.

This is a challenge for me because it’s so easy to get sucked into a routine. I’m probably the youngest one here, and it’s a struggle even for me to break routine for small things. Our careers, families, property, and land all require our attention, and it’s easy to get distracted. Let this serve as a reminder that things can change real quick, and what we put off today may not be around tomorrow. I think COVID has done a great job of that. Treating each day as a new day is definitely most important when we’re talking about people in our community, people who need help. An old army saying goes something like this: Let’s keep our eyes peeled and our powder dry. We men of F3 stand at the ready to serve, so let’s do it with energy and precision!

        Moleskin

This was a very cold workout. I’m glad the men showed up to participate. Milkman won the competitive event, so he gets a gold medal? Gold disk? Gold shoes? Anyway, the important thing is that today America won the Olympic Events at F3. ‘Nuff said.

Perfect timing – Jesus demonstrated it!
          John 7:1; 6-9

“After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.”
John 7:1 ESV. Then beginning in vs 4
His Earthly brothers said to Him…

“For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” For not even his brothers believed in him. Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” After saying this, he remained in Galilee.”
          John 7:4-9 ESV
          https://www.bible.com/59/jhn.7.4-9.esv

Have you ever had something you were praying for/seeking as an opportunity and everything just worked out perfectly from a timing perspective?

As a leader, decision making and the timeliness of it can make all the difference in the world. Everyday, we are faced with decisions that stretch and grow us…if we lean into them and embrace them? In the passage i read, Jesus knew the Jews wanted to kill him and he knew the timing wasn’t right for him to perform his next miracle at one of the biggest festivals of the year. His brothers wanted that to be his stage to reveal himself to the world. But, Jesus knew his time wasn’t until Passover. He still showed up, but delayed in doing so, because he as the God/Man trusted the Father’s plan and allowed it to play out in God’s timing.

I want to leave you with this as a leadership thought on perfect timing.

When you have a crucial conversation or big decision to make, lay it God’s feet and Trust God with it. Ask Him to reveal in his perfect timing like he did with Jesus. What I have found to be true is that God has been faithful to reveal to me when the timing was right in making that tough decision. He never shows up too early and never too late, but always right on time. When you are unsure wait and let God work. when you do, you will look back on it later and see that He made it clear at just the right time!

YHC instructed Pax to grab a Battle Buddy. Not to be mistaken for a partner, the Battle Buddy is there to push and encourage his counterpart. This seemed to confuse the Pax as they thought it was a Dora especially when the rep count was revealed.
I Have Nothing Creative for this, but the Pax agreed a routine similar will work for a monthly barometer. So, the ” The Monthly Barometer thing at Shot House Where We Lift Blocks and Run A Lot”??

This “design” led to some modifying/mixing by the Pax. My only request was to do no less than 50 reps at a time and, of course, no less than one lap at a time. Minimum goal was 2 miles and 100 Merkins Completed. Ultimate goal — Complete ALL reps and run 3 miles.

            COT

Endurance is often a hard thing to truly define. Yesterday at the Huey was all about endurance, but so was today. YHC promised the men of the Huey, yesterday; that today’s workout would be very different, and it was, so how then, are they both about endurance. Well, each required a man to push himself to finish something that was difficult.
Today, we got our Battle Buddy for encouragement NOT competition. True endurance calls us to compete, Paul encourages competition in the Bible, but that competition is all about competition within rather than without.
Finding motivation to push oneself in race in which someone else is leading is much easier than finding motivation to suddenly push harder.
Funny thing, life is much more about the latter rather than the former. Life’s obstacles only provide the obstacle to surmount. It doesn’t provide a leader as a benchmark to “catch” before finishing.
You want help with endurance, you must find the inner strength, but life does provide people. People can become Battle Buddies. Battle Buddy connections mean each man encourages the other to push hard and fast past the obstacles rather competing against each other to finish the obstacle first.

              1. Mosey to track and do an Indian run for two laps around the track with football. Football was laterally passed to each PAX until the last person runs to front of the line with the ball to repeat.
              2. Line up on the end zone to begin the game. Ponce predicted a Superbowl final score of TB 35, KC 32 so we did the following on the goal line:
                35 Merkins
                32 Squats
              3. Picked a QB and a Receiver. From the goal line, the receiver will run a 10-15 yd route and try to catch the ball. All PAX hold plank during execution of route – 7 burpees for incomplete pass. Receiver becomes QB and repeat with next/new Receiver.
Everyone bear crawls to the 20 yd line.
              4. Repeat with next two QBs and Receivers. PAX hold plank – 7 burpees for incomplete.
Everyone crawl bear back to the goal line.
              5. Repeat with next two QBs and Receivers. PAX hold plank – 7 burpees for incomplete.
Everyone karaokees to the 20 yd line and reverse lead continuing to the 40 yd line.
              6. Halftime – run up/down bleachers and do 14 dips before returning to the field.
              7. Repeat with next two QBs and Receivers. PAX hold plank – 7 burpees for incomplete.
Everyone lunges to the 20 yd line.
              8. Repeat with next two QBs and Receivers. PAX hold plank – 7 burpees for incomplete.

We quickly realized we were going to do a LOT of burpees…so somewhere maybe midway through we switched to squats when the ball was not caught. As Milkman mentioned in a slack post afterwards, it’s evident we are not going to be super bowl champs. The lit football was a big help to see in the falsely lit stadium lights…when the ball would stay lit :-). Overall it seemed to be a fun workout and will have to bring it back out for a future Q. Really appreciated all the fellowship this morning.

This is a Dora Variant where instead of traveling as a timing method, we do 15 Squats.

Round 1 – 200 Block Curls. PAX 1 knocks out 15 squats while PAX 2 completes as many block Curls as possible; switch and repeat until a cumulative total of 200 reps are complete

44 degrees, felt like 39 degrees. Of course, the “feels like” gauge could vary depending on layers. Foggy. Slightly frozen fogginess. Everything had a nice dampness to it while at the same time the air felt cool and crispy dry.

For Christmas, YHC received a cube with a variety of exercises on it. Today, the Pax would roll, kick, toss etc.. to another Pax. Whatever the magic cube decided, well at least at the beginning, is the exercise the Pax completed. Exercises were completed the “hard way” and any Pax with Q experience led chosen exercise in cadence.
                  Kick the Cube
                  30 American Hammers IC
20 Merkins OYO — these were “popular”

                  Exercsises Not Making The Cut
                  Water Break
                  Side Plank
                  Wall Sit

See You When I See You
Partner up. Run in opposite directions. Upon meeting partner complete 20 Merkins. Continue running. Upon meeting again. Complete 20 squats. Rinse and Repeat until 80 reps are completed and 2 miles together are completed.

                  COT

I assured anyone reading this; that, I am well aware this whole cube routine could appear to be a lazy way to plan a workout, but I assure you thought was put into it. The whole purpose of the cube portion of the workout was put there to lead into the COT.

The Pax, as long as they didn’t cheat, had zero idea what exercise would land on them. They did not know what kind of “bearer of bad news” they would have to be. They especially did not know, in the beginning, they would have to lead certain exercises in cadence.
Why this cube? The cube is random. It comes flying from an unknown direction with unknown consequences. The Pax had to adapt and lead.
Isn’t that a metaphor for life. Things come from all directions. We do not know what may arrive from that unknown direction, nor what will be asked of us.
We are left, then, with bowing up our chest, placing God’s armor upon us, and facing the unknown with courage. Our families, friends, brothers, and Nation needs us more than ever to do this.

U-Turn left at 5:18. She Shed reminded us that U-Turn did this so he could….make a U-Turn. Thankfully, on his return, he brought the flag.
                  Burpees — still not popular

Hixson has been a great growth point for us in F3 Chattanooga. Milk has taken Shot House straight to 3 days a week to alleviate some overcrowding a Lions Den
. The AO was so well received it had to split off again to form Detention. Great job by all. Keep it going through the winter, keep bringing those guys out. Spread the joy that is F3.

                    Moleskin

Was a bit quiet this morning. We did not talk any soccer which was surprising with Milk and Fizz in attendance. I am not complaining about that, but I could have used some of that magic spray about halfway through this morning.
