    Another week, more stories about how adult men don’t have meaningful friendships and 15% of American adults are suffering post traumatic stress just from the pandemic alone.

    I make no secret about why I post with F3: the impact on my mental health has brought me out of a dark place in my life that was caused by an emotional and tragic loss……multiple losses of men that I served with in the Marine Corps.

    There is no shame in taking care of your mental health regardless of what our society might tell you. Don’t neglect it! Talk to someone if you need. Attend more beatdowns during the week. It has absolutely changed my life!

      For what it’s worth, the Q’s wardrobe selection was not calibrated with the degrees on Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit’s temperature scale this morning. Short pants in sub-40 (by the measurement) is perplexing with regard to ‘The Steve’. While I could chalk it up to oversight or to knowing the thing that the rest of the crew didn’t know beforehand: constant movement and activity increases blood flow and we can all speak from experience on what blood flow does for our *ahem* limbs cardiovascular system (forgive the unintended sophomoric reference, Nopeton; we are all there are adults, here)

      And so went the 1“Disclaimer” and pronouncement of events to follow

      1 Disclaimer maybe missed the target, and words like ‘love’ and ‘feelings’ were inserted and therefore it was effective as (spoiler alert!) no one died. Add a notch to the ‘W’ column

      Struggled at times with confidence and losing the mind game. This poem helped me. Don’t let yourself lose the battle in your mind before the battle ever begins.

      If you think you are beaten, you are;
      If you think you dare not, you don’t.

      If you’d like to win, but you think you can’t,
      It is almost a cinch you won’t.

      If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost;
      For out in this world we find
      Success begins with a person’s will
      It’s all in the state of mind.

      If you think you’re outclassed, you are;

      You’ve got to think high to rise.
      You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
      You can ever win the prize.

      Life’s battles don’t always go
      To the stronger or faster man;

      But sooner or later the person who wins
      Is the one who thinks he can!

      Pre-beatdown playlists are just as crucial as the actual beatdown playlist. Don’t lose that opportunity to break out some Color Me Badd or New Kids on the Block. Conjuring images and scenes about 8th grade dance or ‘this was my first cassette tape’ builds bonds faster than the actual boot camp.

      I can’t think of a better soundtrack to rep 20 burpees after 270 reps and suicides than the dulcet tones of Alice in Chains. Fitting for the mood. Recycle is a winner amongst winners in this category of playlist curation.

      Still on the topic of Recycle – he shows up wearing his Prosciutto gold beads. Which then, begs the question, ‘Who do you have to kill to earn those gold beads?’

      How about my guy Gusher interrupting his pre-F3 rounds on the track to help with the block setup? Get the picture, I show up, start blaring NKOTB and Color Me Badd and he still sticks around and then humors me with Gusher trivia; indeed an exceptional HIM.

      If you need a great pizza-making song, let me know. I got you.

          Reflecting back on the growth we have seen not only at #Smackdown but throughout F3 Chattanooga in 2020, I am excited about seeing what 2021 holds for us.

          We have grown our Qs significantly and have a few more than a dozen Qs just on the Mountain alone. Adding Joanna with his VQ next week and 2-3 more in February.

          #Smackdown is thriving…but there is always room for more #SadClowns. Keep EHing! Your neighbor needs F3 and he doesn’t know it yet.

          Make a resolution to visit AND Q some other AOs around the region in 2021. There are great High Impact Men all over F3 Chattanooga….don’t limit yourself by only working out up in the fresh air!

          Whittler was disappointed the Pruett’s cold beer patio was not open for drinking. Red Raider agreed that you can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning.

          There was some mumble chatter during our mosey about somebody wanting to run a half marathon. I don’t understand why anyone would run that far without being chased.

              28 with light precipitation. That was enough degrees for 15 to appear at Smackdown; many of those were more than 5 minutes early.

              One was multiples of 5 early and his pre-F3 laps around the track appeared to be effortless; so much so; that even several others joined in on that fun.,;..<

              Of the 15 that did show, there was one who was not there. He who shall not be mentioned further. In case you were wondering who he is, here’s a hint; his name does not appear in the PAX line above. Start there and work backwards. Or as Dr. Stephen Covey coined with his phrase, “Begin with the end in mind”.;

              The cloudburst of precipitation is only explained by the snow rituals my children perform when even the slightest flake falls from the heavens. There are some who might suggest that these false rituals are a display of the devil’s hand; I prefer to blame it on their 1/32nd (~3%) genetic makeup of indigenous people. The genetics manifest themselves in interesting forms, don’t they? For example, neither of my children make meatballs nor bedeck themselves with gold jewelry;;; yet they’re 50% Italian AT A MINIMUM!??!! I’m incredulous to this fact.

              For those interested; the rituals (in no particular order);;;.:;:;
              1) Place a silver spoon under the pillow next to the pillow you intend to lay your head
              2) Turn your bedroom apparel ensemble inside out prior to evening retirement
              3) Flush ice cubes down the toilet; how many ice cubes? — my children believe the more you flush the more snow there will be; be careful if you’re home is plumbed with an advanced septic system; henceforth and therefore – Precipitation!!

              My 6 year anniversary in F3 was this past Saturday. To celebrate? I bowed out of my Q at Convoy. I don’t have any great joke to tell or funny story as to why. The truth is I failed to realize I was on Q until I saw the message on slack stating such; I was unprepared. I reached out to Burrito to inform him of such and he coordinated a fitting alternate; to whom I believe helped me as I fell. This two-man network, summed up the verse above perfectly and provides a clear illustration and embodiment of my experience with F3.

              There’s no mishap or uniqueness here, it is not germane to only this one situation; this system of fellowship and accountability is working exactly as intended. F3 has been a cornerstone of my life for the past several years. It is that for the very reason of what Hambone did for me on Saturday, and will likely do again for another in due time. This is likely because of what has been done on his behalf or FOR him.

              As men continue to F3, they begin to realize that where they may have once come to F3 to better themselves, over time, there’s a seemingly surreptitious shift away from self-improvement and the mission becomes the benificence of others. Real great groupa guys here. I never fear a time when I fall and no one is there to help me up. That will never be a worry again in my lifetime. Here’s to 6 plus 60 more years!

              200 block swings sounded like a good idea at the time; on second thought?

              Apparently the battle for the Cy-Hawk trophy is a deeper-seated rivalry than some of the more well-known rivalries; e.g. Auburn-Alabama, Red Sox-Yankees, Duke-North Carolina. Were you to mistake an Iowa State fan for an Iowa fan – he may never trust you again – he may never return to F3 – he might try to harm you. Send chocolates and flowers, if only you’re empathetic enough.

              It was quiet this morning; but why? Like the age-old question of how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop — the world may never know.

              Pre-F3 laps in the winter create fellowship opportunities you didn’t know could happen – and you warm-up. Skip this if you don’t like a win-win.

                Gretel

                We got our nickname Devil Dogs from official German reports which called the Marines at the WWI Battle of Belleau Wood “Teufel Hunden”. It has been said that this nickname came about from Marines being ordered to take a hill occupied by German forces while wearing gas masks as a precaution against German mustard gas. While the Marines fought their way up the hill, the heat caused them to sweat profusely, foam at the mouth and turned their eyes bloodshot, and at some points the hill was so steep it caused the Marines to climb up it on all fours. From the Germans’ vantage point, they witnessed a pack of tenacious, growling figures wearing gas masks, with bloodshot eyes and mouth foam seeping from the sides, advancing up the hill, sometimes on all fours, killing everything in their way. As the legend goes, the German soldiers, upon seeing this spectacle, began to yell that they were being attacked by “dogs from hell.” Additionally, the Marines earned such a reputation at the battle of Belleau Wood that the French officially renamed the landscape “Bois de la Brigade de Marine”–“The Wood of the Marine Brigade”

                PAX complete a lap around the track as follows: 10 squat jumps at corner, “Devil Dog crawls” (bear crawls) around turn, 10 monkey humpers, mosey the straight, repeat at other end

                Recycle

                PAX pair up. Mosey to the visitors side of the field.

                One partner completes reps, one moseys to the home side and completes 10 curls for the girls. Keep going until the pair completes 245 Marine Corps pushups.

                COT

                On November 1st, 1921, John A Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, directed that a reminder of the honorable service of the Corps be published by every command, to all Marines throughout the globe, on the birthday of the Corps. Since that day, Marines have continued to distinguish themselves on many battlefields and foreign shores, in war and in peace. On this birthday of the Corps, therefore, in compliance with the will of the 13th Commandant, Article 38, United States Marine Corps Manual, Edition of 1921, is republished as follows:

                “On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Since that date, many thousand men have borne the name Marine. In memory of them, it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the Birthday of our Corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.”

                “The record of our Corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world’s history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation’s foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and in the long eras of tranquility at home generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres, and in every corner of the seven seas that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security. In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our Corps Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term Marine has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.”

                “This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the Corps. With it we also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our Corps from generation to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as “Soldiers of the Sea” since the founding of the Corps.”

                The inspiring message of our 13th Commandant has left it’s mark in the hearts and minds of all Marines. By deed and act from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima, from Inchon to the Korean Armistice, in interventions from Lebanon to the Dominican Republic, from the opening battles in Vietnam to Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and from Kandahar and Helmand in Afghanistan to Nasiriyah and Fallujah in Iraq, Marines have continued to epitomize those qualities which are their legacy. The success which they have achieved in combat and the faith they have borne in peace will continue. The Commandant and our many friends have added their hearty praise and congratulations on this, our 245th birthday.

                  Discussed what F3 has meant to me. Started with me wanting to be more active and get in shape. F3 has become much more. Developed many friendships and a support group. With 2020 being such a crazy and unpredictable year, F3 has been the one thing that has remained consistent and that is in my control. No matter what is going on in the world around us in our personal lives, this group of men comes together every week and goes through the same beatdown together.

                  We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now. – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

                    Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

                    Think about what it means to work as if you are working for the Lord in everything you do? Imagine our world if everyone worked this way? Too often we seek the reward before we put in the effort. I want to get promoted at work, but what have I done to deserve that promotion? Have I truly put forth my best effort?
