On this day last year, Smackdown was launched and a new standard was set across Chattanooga and all the lands; a beautiful scene overlooking the valleys and rivers.

It was then, as it was today, a superb morning filled with cool mountainous air, fresh dew landscape and a willing group of able-bodied gentlemen to assume the challenge of starting anew as had been done previously (albeit, at lower altitudes).

Questions abound, will the thin air make us weak? Will it help?

Are we men on high? or high on men?

With the expensive homes within earshot, are people up here really interested in “free”?

Can we justify adding a second day right in middle of iron pax?

We had 3 FNGs that day, will they return?

Fast forward one year later, so much has happened. So much growth. So so so much growth. A Saturday added, a pandemic resurgence. Men responded in ways unimaginable.

One man set himself apart from the rest, accepted his next challenge and calling. He stepped up and began to make it his own, without being formally asked. He was the clear choice without having been chosen.
He made himself the only choice. High impact men are expected to act in this way.

I say all that to say this – it is with great pleasure and excitement that Whittler and I step aside and hand-off the Smackdown AOQ to Recycle (Gray Ramsey) and look forward to where it goes from here!

        Super 21’s with Field Goals
        Started with 1 Squat on the goal line, run to the 20 yd line and 20 LBC’s, then Bernie Sanders back to goal line; then 2 Squats, run to the 20 yd line and 19 LBC’s; repeat and rinse until we do 20 Squats and 1 LBC.

        After each set of 5 squats, the Pax moved to the 10 yd line and 5 guys took a turn at a field goal attempt (20 yd FG or extra point distance). While the Pax attempted the FG, the remainder of the Pax did an exercise determined by the kicker(squats, merkins, etc). If kicker made the FG, the Pax continued that exercise. If the kicker missed his attempt, there was a 5 burpee penalty for all the Pax!

        The Pax made the first 9 of 10 attempts much to the shock of YHC. The Pax did not fare so well after that with more misses than makes!

        Darkness versus the Light! 1 John 1:5-10 (read). We began our workout in the darkness of the gloom, including kicking field goals in the dark. Kicking is hard enough in the light! However, as we continued our workout, the sun began to shed light on our efforts. 1 John 1 talks about the difference that the Light of Christ makes in the life of one who puts his faith and trust in Jesus! “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 Without Christ, we walk in darkness of our sin, but in Christ we walk in the light of his forgiveness.

          These are the names of the 8 Marines and 1 Navy Corpsman that were killed in the AAV that sunk off the coast of San Clemente, CA one week ago today. The oldest of these men was 23.

          Lost in all the arguing about masks and social justice and politics is that our military is still training to fight, and that training is inherently dangerous. I believe that our society has become disillusioned with the fact that we have been at war for 20 years now and we have young men and women who are volunteering to put themselves in harms way on a daily basis who were not even alive on 9/11/01.

          Please keep the families of these young men in your thoughts and prayers as they have to bury their sons, brothers, fiances, and husbands way too soon.

          Please also remember the survivors of the accident; fellow Marines and sailors that have to live with the loss and guilt that they will feel in the aftermath.

          I am thankful that we have men like these. And I am thankful that they chose to represent our Corps.

I want to work towards a promotion at work.” These goals give us a target to shoot for.

              It is important we never allow ourselves to stop looking forward. Comparison for the purpose of measuring your worth is a dangerous game. Emulate the good qualities you see in people. Find someone successful at what you are striving for and be humble enough to seek their guidance.

                What comes out when you squeeze an orange? What is inside is what comes out. Orange Juice. We really broke ground today at Smackdown! I challenged the guys to consider what happens when we are “squeezed” because what is inside of us is what will come out. How do we act when we’re under stress at work or home? Is it something good or bad? We can control it if we’re aware of it. The next time you’re feeling squeezed think about orange juice and hopefully it makes you pause and consider how to react.

                I tried to find out something new about Recycle during a ten count near the end of the workout. He said something about his grandfather coaching the Bills in the 50s. Pretty cool if I have that right.

                Pretty sure Chattanooga hasn’t had a breeze from 0530-0615 at any point anywhere in the last two months

                  Circle up on the football field for a quick alphabet. Remain in circle, hold plank then work around the circle with everyone doing 3 merkins. Complete a full round of the PAX, then continue to hold plank & do 3 atomic merkins.

                  Watched a video the other day of an Australian Football broadcaster opening up about a complication that his daughter had soon after being born. The video was called The Last Time I Cried and it really hit home with me about how men are often expected to be the rock or less emotional member of a relationship.

                  So many times you’ll see a wife or partner as the more openly emotional member of the relationship, and in those times the man has to comfort his wife/partner and doesn’t have the opportunity to outwardly express his own emotions.

                  I encouraged the PAX to reflect on the last time they cried or felt overwhelmed with emotion, and to talk about that moment with someone they feel comfortable with.

                    PAX begin with 10 burpees on the 10 yard line and go down 1 every 10 yards going back to the goal line after each set of burpees. Finish with 1 burpee on opposite goal line.

                    After burpees completed, PAX begin on 10 yard line with 10 American Hammers, going back to the goal line after each set and increasing reps by 2 every 10 yards. Finish with 28 American Hammers on opposite goal line.

                    Duck Duck Mary

                    PAX circle up around shovel flag and get on their six. Two PAX on opposite sides of the circle get up and run around the circle while other PAX AMRAP exercises called out by the QIC. When PAX return to their starting position, next PAX get up and run.

                    It will come as a shock to no man who has posted with F3 that we borrow a lot of what we do from the military. From exercises to lexicon to counting cadence to completing after action reports (backblasts), it’s obvious that there are military fingerprints all over our organization. It’s also evident in the way we teach leadership and train Effective and Virtuous leaders.

                    The penultimate event of Marine Corps Recruit Training is called the Crucible. During the Crucible, recruits participate in different obstacles and challenges that require teamwork and leaders to emerge and help foster esprit de corps. During this time of very little sleep and even less food, drill instructors will have periods of instruction with the recruits in which they will read Medal of Honor citations. Medal of Honor recipients invariably demonstrate character traits that can be found in every Effective and Virtuous leader: courage, integrity, commitment and selflessness.                     The QIC read the PAX the Medal of Honor citation for Army Technical Sergeant Charles Coolidge. Signal Mountain resident Sgt Coolidge is one of only two living Medal of Honor recipients from World War II. Sgt. Coolidge’s actions during late October 1944 demonstrated those leadership traits that we hope to develop in ourselves.
